Blankets Creek: Trails are closed due to freeze/thaw until further notice

Now the big wait starts. This long freeze stretch we just had is finally coming to an end (fingers crossed). They say this has been the longest extended cold snap since the 1880s. Crazy I tell you. With the temps going back into the 40s, the big long dry out is going to take time. I predict it is going to take a couple of weeks to dethaw and dry out.

Please be patient. Riding these trails when they are drying out from a deep freeze will severely damage them. We have a long list of cool trail projects in the pipeline for 2010. Please don't ruin it for us by making us fix the existing trails instead of building new ones.

We all want to ride too...

It's been 1 day and just knowing the trails are closed, I miss them. I will just watch them on youtube and settle for "Dwelling" dreams. See you when the thaw is over.

So the trails will definately be closed this coming Friday (1/15) when it possibly hits 60 degrees?

Tony, Yes it will be closed. The top 12 inches of ground is still frozen. It will take a full week of 60 degree temps to thaw it out to riding conditions. Info on why is here:

Even though I only hike there, I miss them as well. I had a bad knee injury in a Parkour accident about 2 months ago and had been doing my rehab walks there, does anyone have any alternative places to bike/hike?

Liam - Try Red Top Mtn State park. Or Kennesaw Mtn

Soap Creek at the Northeast corner of 75 and 285 has some good/similar hiking trails. Mtn biking is second rate compared to Blankets though.

Thanks for sharing that explanation Jay. :)

Liam: You can also try the Big Creek Greenway in Alpharetta if that's convenient for you.

I see a small trail north of Blankets Creek. I think its marked with two 'red bands' around the trees. Is that part of blankets creek or is that a private trail. It looks like it extends into the sub-division north of Sixes road. Do you know anything about this?

January 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMark

The trail on the north side of Sixes is a private trail at American Heritage Academy. The red bands indicate Corp boundaries; triple red band is a change of direction.

I'm kind of curious... how much longer? Living like 2 miles away, I can honestly say despite the bad weather it hasn't reached freezing in about 2 weeks now.

Liam, It''s not freeze/thaw now that is affecting the trails. Its the water/mud. We need enought sun and wind to dry them out now.
